BluetoothTM Qualification Procedure White Paper is the registered trademark of Atmel Corporation, 2325 Orchard Parkway, San Jose, CA 95131 Rev. 1992A-11/00 White Paper Scope Qualification Procedure Outline The purpose of this document is to provide an outline of the procedure that is followed in order to qualify a product in compliance with Bluetooth. Figure 1 illustrates the basic Bluetooth qualification procedure. The Manufacturer becomes first an Adopter and pulls all necessary qualification documents from the web. Links are established with BQB (Bluetooth Qualification Body) and BQTF (Bluetooth Qualification Test Facility). Where required testing is done at an accredited BQTF and the test results become a part of the compliance folder. A successful review of the compliance folder by the BQB leads to listing of the Adopter product as Bluetooth Qualified. Overview The Bluetooth wireless technology is an open specification for short-range wireless communications between electronic devices. It is anticipated that a large number of Bluetooth devices from many vendors will soon appear on the market. In order to minimize or eliminate interoperability problems, a specific set of procedures are followed as defined by the Bluetooth Qualification Program (BQP). This is a necessary requirement before a product can be qualifi ed i n c om pl i an ce wit h B lu eto ot h. Th e Bl u eto ot h qualification is the process by which a manufacturer demonstrates compliance to the Bluetooth specification and the BQP is the framework that establishes the qualification rules and procedures. The compliance folder contains complete product information: * Product description, including Bluetooth Profiles supported, name, model number, hardware, software and firmware version numbers. * Reference design schematics, parts list and all printed circuit board diagrams. * Reference design application note and technical description. Note that the BQP is carried out independently of any mandatory regulatory type approval defined by national or international regulations. * Functional block diagram. * User documentation, manual or guide. Any manufacturer of a Bluetooth wireless technology product must have signed a Bluetooth SIG membership agreement. When this product complies with the Bluetooth specification, it is added to the Qualified Products List. This grants the Member Company a Bluetooth license covering royalty-free intellectual property patent rights and allows it to use the Bluetooth brand on products and marketing activities according to the Bluetooth Brand Book. * Declaration of compliance by the manufacturer. * Completed ICS (Implementation Conformance Statement) and IXIT (Implementation Extra Information for Testing) forms. * Test report from accredited BQTF, showing that all active test cases of the Bluetooth Test Case Reference List (TCRL) as of date of application reception by BQB are completed. At the time of this writing, the Bluetooth qualification process is still under implementation and may change before the final specification is defined. Updated information is found at www.bluetooth.com under the heading "Qualification". * Test report from Adopter, showing that all tests required of the Adopter are completed. * Qualified Product Notice and Listing Notice is provided by the BQB. The test specifications cover: * Radio frequency qualification testing Four test categories are described in the TCRL tables: * Category A: Product testing on validated and commercially available qualification test equipment by a recognized BQTF. * Protocol conformance testing * Profile conformance testing * Profile interoperability testing * Category B: Product testing using standard test equipment performed by either the manufacturer or a BQTF. A declaration of compliance with evidence is required. * Category C: Product testing using standard test equipment performed by either the manufacturer or a BQTF. A declaration of compliance without evidence is satisfactory. * Category D: Preliminary test case with no official qualification value. It serves the purpose of informing manufacturers about upcoming test cases. The TCRL lists all applicable tests together with their category status. 3 Atmel Headquarters Atmel Operations Corporate Headquarters Atmel Colorado Springs 2325 Orchard Parkway San Jose, CA 95131 TEL (408) 441-0311 FAX (408) 487-2600 1150 E.
